10 tips for winning at Artist’s Alley

Con season is starting up again and I figured it’s time to dispense some experience from the many cons I have attended and talking to many people who *want* to vendor in Artist’s Alley and have no idea of where to start.

Very very good tips!!
Just wanted to add a warning to one of them that I learned the first two times I had a con table waaayyyy back in 2009.

Be VERY careful what you offer for free!
When I first started, I had three black and white bookmark designs that I copied onto card stock paper. I put my information on them and used them as business cards. Good idea right? Except that people took those free items and then didn’t buy any of the bookmarks for sale. See the free item was too good. People took that, had my art and didn’t need to pay for anything else.

So if you do offer something for free, don’t make it too nice. You don’t want your free item to compete with the items people can buy because people will take free over paid every time.

Display Your Prints!
No, really, if you want to sell prints, make sure people can see them easily. I sold next to no prints for two years because I just kept them in a portfolio on the table. Once I made a display out of PVC pipe and hung prints from it, sales sky rocketed. I sold more prints at one convention than I had in all the other previous conventions combined.
So make sure your prints are up and on display if you want to sell them!

Sketchbooks Sales are Declining
Sketchbooks are IMHO one of the most awesome things I can buy from an artist. I love ‘em. However, from what I’ve seen and hard, sales on these are declining. So I’m not saying don’t make them (because I want to buy them from you if you do!) but keep costs low. Try not to make anything you need to sell for more than $5 or $10 as that tends to be the most people pay unless you are a known artist.

Don’t Try and Do it Alone!
My best friend Elly, sits at the tables with me and pretty much saves my life. When things get busy, having someone else there to take money, keep things organized, and talk to people while I draw is critical. There is no way I could do it all by myself. So if you have a friend who can help, let them help!

And one last things.
The tip about using a suitcase btw is GOLD. I wish I’d thought of a rolling suitcase years earlier!

More great advice from Katie Crenshaw!

I have to respectfully disagree on not pricing items over $10 though - I recommend a range of prices instead. I don’t sell nearly as many pieces of original art (my high ticket items) during a con as I do bookmarks (my lowest priced) but the few that do sell more than make up for it. And I am not a famed artist by far! Best to be comfortable with the prices you’re asking for, it’s always easiest to mark high and lower them later than the reverse.

Some suitcase vendors are also making a hockey bag sized duffle with suitcase wheels and handles. I got one from Roots - can’t wait to try it out!

Oh I meant the 5 to 10 thing specifically for sketchbooks, not everything. What you say about pricing is totally right though. My Prints vary from $5 to $20 and my original art from $5 to $300. I don’t sell many high end prints, but just two usually covers printing costs, and one original art sale can sometimes cover the whole table. :D

But for sketchbooks, because they have a higher printing overhead then prints and take lots of time to put together, I wanted to mention that the average price that still sells well is about 5 to 10.

(also! Hello! very excited to talk to another artist alley vet :D)

D’oh, my bad! I have seen folks advocate selling nothing for more than a few dollars in the past, and I’m always an advocate for not voluntarily starving as an artist. Sorry to jump the gun.

Definitely agree on sketchbooks being cheaper, it’s lovely to see them nicely bound but for smaller runs the cost is insanely prohibitive, especially in color. You get a better return on comics or novels for the effort and cost involved. An ashcan zine (done with a B&W photocopier, maybe a color cover) can give you a very nice product for a few cents a page without running up supply cost, and has such a low entry threshold for being published I think everyone should be doing it.

(Yes hello, nice to meet you! I don’t get to swap war stories out of con often, and at con everything’s such a blur!)

All of the above is brilliant information. I can certainly vouch for increased sales when I displayed my prints rather than have them in a portfolio.

I’ll add a few tidbits from my own experience. I’ve done comic cons and furry cons, small, medium and huge. Main thing that happens in bigger cons is that the higher the number of dealers, the more each attendee’s budget will be split into smaller and smaller cuts to make sure they get something from many sellers. Also, in big cons, most (experienced) people don’t spend any money on the first day, because they don’t want to make the mistake of spending their budget first and then realising further in the dealers’ room that there’s other artists and artisans they would have loved to get product from. For this reason, make sure you have low-priced items to sell quickly, that people will buy (the ashcan mentioned above and prints, for sure), so you don’t end up being passed by for being “too expensive”.

Know your con. Some cons are great for original, on-the-spot commissions (furry cons are this way in particular) whereas others are more about merchandise (make sure you have art books or comics or prints or already made originals or the like, that people can just grab and go, and not have to return to you to pick up art). There’s always overlap. In big comic cons, I’ve chosen to limit the offerings to quickly done art for a lowish price, whereas in the small furry cons, I bring all my markers and bristol, my laminator and clips to make custom con badges in full colour, and I get to make large, full colour pieces at these.

Your posture in Artist Alleys and Dealers Rooms is awful because you’re sitting on a plastic chair, working on a flat table. I highly recommend finding an inclined surface to work on. I just bought a wood laptop tray, which helped me sit straighter in my chair instead of hunched over. Other advantages include that I can see the people walking up to my table, I don’t have my hair in my face, my neck isn’t killing me after a few hours, and since I have tennis elbow from drawing and one unfortunate bad move while rock-climbing, the better back position made my arm not hurt as much.

(OH HAI artist con people! Looking forward to seeing CK in November at HalCon!)

More excellent advice from seasoned convention pro Karine Charlebois! Soon, soon I will be able to stalk your wares in person :}

renisanz:

10 tips for winning at Artist’s Alley

Con season is starting up again and I figured it’s time to dispense some experience from the many cons I have attended and talking to many people who *want* to vendor in Artist’s Alley and have no idea of where to start.

I haven’t done a con (yet), but I did participate in an arts festival for the first time, last month. So all of these tips apply.

Probably the most effective things for me was having a wide range of prices for items ($5-$120) and being approachable—just saying “hi” and smiling warmly at people as they passed. Just because you got less than three hours of sleep the night before doesn’t mean you have to look like it or be grumpy.

I remember when I was trying to decide whether or not to apply for the fest, thinking I didn’t have much to sell. But then I remembered that I could make a buch of stuff. I was already selling notecards and fine art prints, so I had a bunch of those in stock already. I ended up printing more stuff the day of. A week before I ordere a bunch of moleskine cahiers to customize. I got 4 done before the show and sold two of them at festival.

Whenever I do a festival/art market again, I hope to have my bookmarks available.

Oh, it also was a big help to be able to take credit/debit cards. I think it’s great to get either a Square or a PayPal card reader, because they’re awesome and really convenient.

Lastly, I think it really helps to put for the effort to package your stuff nicely. Just take a trip to Hobby Lobby, Michael’s or (preferably) your locally owned and operated independent art supply store, to get some clear acetate bags to hold your prints. It shows that you care about your art, and it will make other people care, too. :)

Artfests count! :)

I love that technology has advanced so far that we can have credit card processing in our hands, but it’s still good not to neglect having a change float for those who are more tactile or not comfortable with them (or Canadian).

Great addition regarding packaging as well, if nothing else clear page protectors with holes for binders can be gotten for 8.5x11 art at most dollar stores, and they’re excellent for keeping a bunch of smaller items (ie: business cards) together.

Thanks for throwing in!

katiecrenshaw:

Very very good tips!!
Just wanted to add a warning to one of them that I learned the first two times I had a con table waaayyyy back in 2009.

Be VERY careful what you offer for free!
When I first started, I had three black and white bookmark designs that I copied onto card stock paper.
So if you do offer something for free, don’t make it too nice. You don’t want your free item to compete with the items people can buy because people will take free over paid every time.

Display Your Prints!
No, really, if you want to sell prints, make sure people can see them easily.
(Yes hello, nice to meet you! I don’t get to swap war stories out of con often, and at con everything’s such a blur!)

Oh no problem! I totally get it too because too many people think we artists should just give our art away. I guess we don’t need to eat or earn a living or anything. I see a lot of people try and guilt artists into not selling at a fair price. :(

And very very good advice on ashcans. I keep meaning to try one, but first I need a story that isn’t a bajillion pages long LOL.

Oh man cons are such a blur aren’t they? I miss being able to just walk and meet all the artists. I haven’t had a lot of time for that recently, even before shows, and I’m missing it. And when I do it’s all so fast I’ll get home with this handful of cards and I’m like 0.o when did we meet!?

I cheated on my last, the zine is a 11 page “0” issue with a “coming next” and web address on the last page. I hope it’ll help me hold out till the longer trade version, the next issue is 28ish pages long and ironically cheaper per unit to print as a comic than as an ashcan zine. But I’d also need to print about 2000 copies for that deal sooooo preview ashcans it is!

katiecrenshaw:

I don’t get to swap war stories out of con often, and at con everything’s such a blur!)

katiecrenshaw:

Con season is...

10 tips for winning at Artist’s Alley

Con season is starting up again and I figured it’s time to dispense some experience from the many cons I have attended and talking to many people who *want* to vendor in Artist’s Alley and have no idea of where to start.

10) You DO have things to sell - If you draw or make things at all you’ve got things to sell. If you’re running short of time, dig out some older pieces and make prints or repurpose them for collages, bookmarks, mini prints, buttons ect, and put them on your table. If you don’t have money for prints or merchandise, but do have time (or adequate run up), grab some paper and fill a binder with original art. A box of Crayola pencils can go incredibly far. On a similar note:

9) Bring enough stuff to cover your costs - I often see people paying hundreds for a table alone and bringing merchandise that if sold at full asking price would recoup maybe a quarter of it. It is easier to go in with extra copies of stuff to sell than selling air when you’re trying to recover your costs.

8) Giveaways - have something for free that you can give away that has your name and a way to find you (i.e.: email, web address) on it. This is usually a standard sized business card (the most easily stored), but I’ve seen people use stickers, strips of paper, buttons, fortune cookies or pamphlet type things.

7) Put your name on it - Just like in school, if you want credit for it, put your name on it. This includes writing your name/website on the back of your prints and original art. I got tired of doing this by hand, so I use a photocopier on prints and I have a rubber stamp for the rest (cost about $17 including a stamp pad since it’s the same size as my business cards, but you can go smaller/cheaper). Now wherever your wares go, they lead right back to you!

6) Zines/books - if you have a webcomic, make an ashcan zine that you can sell for a couple of bucks or give away as advertisement to build your readership. If you don’t have a comic, it’s still worth doing the same for a mini art portfolio to have in hand in case you run across an editor or potential client. If you’re in a position where you have print-on-demand or large run books, consider investing in a collapsing shopping or luggage cart so you don’t have to lift that stuff. A spare rolling suitcase works too. Make sure you can move your kit under your own power ahead of time, especially if you know you won’t have helpers.

5) Food - remember to pack a lunch, water/fluids and a box of treats. Mints, lozenges or hard candy are really good as well. If it’s a crowded con or you’re going without a helper you might have trouble getting offsite or through a concession stand line in a timely manner. Having food will help you keep your energy up, lozenges or candies helps maintain your voice, and having extra bottles of water or edibles to offer to neighbours is an excellent way to introduce yourselves and make friends, especially if you’re the shy sort that have trouble doing that sort of thing.

4) First in, last out - as a vendor at most cons you have the benefit of being allowed in early and permitted to stay after attendees are kicked out. Make use of that, come as early as you can and use the time to set up, run around and see things, or just decompress and get breakfast into you. On the same note, you don’t need to be in a rush to pack up by closing (unless you have somewhere to be).

3) Look approachable - You don’t have to look con-goers in the eye but looking scared, angry or desperate (especially if you’re a guy eyeing a lady buyer, this can have Unfortunate Implications) can make people want to give you a wide berth. If you have a sales pitch, try using it on a friend before con, to work out any kinks. Don’t be afraid to smile.

2) Hygiene - Obligatory addition. In animation college an ex-gamedev instructor spent a considerable amount of time begging us to be clean and presentable in office settings and events. I thought it was a little overboard until I started attending more events and worked in a game studio. Showering daily and fresh clothing will make you FEEL better at con, make people in your space feel better, and help avoid con crud. Washing your face can also help you wake up, if you find yourself running down during the day.

1) GO GET EM, TIGER - Every con is a learning experience, you’ll figure out what works for you, what doesn’t, and how to modify your approach next time (keeping track of inventory really helps here). Don’t let a jerk con-goer get you down, or a low sales day put you off the rest of the weekend. In a 3 day con the bulk of your traffic will usually be on the second day, and your fastest sales on the third as people are last minute shopping with the remainder of their budgets. And if you have leftover stock, save it and get a jump on next con!

I’m casting now on...

I’m casting now on JTV: http://www.justin.tv/virtualcara
